Raced Against The Best – Article by Stan Pawloski

At the break, Cool Luke rocketed to the top with Flying Westover and Kiowa Magnate just behind on the inside. WW’s Star Diego was next in line as Hero lagged behind in fifth on the outside and away from traffic.

Clear on the front around the first turn, Cool Luke headed down the backside up by 5 lengths. When Flying Westover and Kiowa Magnate bumped, WW’s Star Diego moved up to second followed by Hero who easily was 10 lengths behind the frontrunner.

“Hero can make up a lot of lengths very quickly, but 10 lengths is a lot,” Strong said.

Loose on the backstretch, Hero put it into another gear as he passed WW’s Star Diego and then set his sights on Cool Luke. Hero closed the gap around the far turn and looked like a sure winner, but lost some ground when he drifted out coming home.

“Hero goes down the backstretch so fast he can’t hold the last turn and floats in the stretch,” Strong said. “He loses 3 or 4 lengths.”

Cool Luke, sent to post as a 10-1 longshot, looked like he might steal the race in mid-stretch. Hero was still 2 or 3 lengths back but driving with his patented midtrack rush.

Was there enough real estate left or would Hero once again have to settle for runnerup honors?

It was too close to call as Cool Luke and Hero hit the wire simultaneously. A photo gave the nod to Hero by a nose.
