Drawing Procedure

Since all greyhounds must be tattooed and listed with the NGA by the time they are 90 days of age, then this provides us with a dependable means of drawing for ownership. Each greyhound has a separate letter in their right ear to designate the identification of that pup in the litter. The left ear will carry an identical number for every pup in that litter, so we can tell they are all from the same litter. To select your greyhound, then you would choose a letter from the right ear of a pup from this litter. An example of a five-dog litter would be; A – B – C – D – E.

Once the litter is tattooed, we submit the paperwork that must be processed with the NGA. A “litter registration” must take place, so each pup in the litter has positive identification. We try to hold all drawings within a week of tattoo. This is when we contact each owner to begin the drawing. Once held, then each owner knows the sex, color and tattoo numbers of the greyhounds they own.

PROCEDURE:

1. We will contact you once the pups have been tattooed and the litter registration has been submitted to the NGA.

2. We will tell you what pick you have (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) all based on when the deposits were received. First come, first served.

3. You will e-mail us your choices for tattoos in order of preference. (Example: If there is a 5 pup litter, then you can submit B-A-D-C-E or if you want the “C” pup most, you can submit C-B-A-D-E, etc.) Please do not send your picks of just a couple of letters, please provide all the letters in your selection so we don’t have to contact you again if both of your choices are unavailable.

4. We will notify you which pup you receive based on which pups have been reserved prior to your pick.

5. We will provide you with a copy of the bertillion (or markings) of the pup that was submitted to the NGA via litter registration.

As soon as your greyhound is paid for in full, then you can register your greyhound with the National Greyhound Association. When final payment is received, then we will automatically contact you to properly register your greyhounds. You must be a member of the NGA before you can register any greyhound, so should join in advance. You can call them at (785) 263-4660 and request they send you an “Application for a Voting Member”. This entitles you to the monthly Greyhound Review magazine, so you can keep up with the happenings in the industry. There is a one-time initiation fee of $100 to join, then annual dues are $70 per year.

Signature Farm takes care of all litter registrations and other administrative requirements of the NGA. After we receive confirmation of the litter registration, then we can properly mark the pups on an individual application registration form, commonly referred to as “onion skins”.

Buy young pups before they have a chance to develop, and your odds of owning a champion at a reasonable price will sky rocket. No one can tell at that age which ones are the best, or have the most speed. It is the safest way to go. Our drawing procedure is just as good as being there, and taking turns picking them out. The reason is . . . one cannot determine at that age how much speed each greyhound in the litter will have by just looking at them. What gets people into trouble is that they don’t want to wait for a young pup to grow and develop. Buy a young pup every six months, then you will soon have enough going that the wait isn’t felt. As more and more reach the track, then the potential is there for your investment to self-perpetuate, or pay for itself as you continue.

All drawings will be held through email. Should a person not own a computer, then we will draw for that person via telephone to keep the process flowing. You will be notified by email when a drawing begins.

When the official registration paper of each greyhound is received by us, we will notify you of the official racing name approved by the NGA. The reason we keep the original is to send it with the greyhound to the race track. A greyhound cannot race without the registration being provided to the racing secretary at the track it races. Once the greyhound completes it’s racing life, then the original registration is returned to you.

  1. Jay Mason (Jay Squared Racing) says:

Wendy, I have a question. With this drawing procedure, do you let owners know what lettered dogs are male or female, before owners select a letter, or is it just total random draw on whether you pick a male or female? Thanks.

    • Jay, We do not let owners know anything about the litter before the pups are drawn. The litter is tattooed, the litter registration is then turned into the NGA and date/time stamped. At that time, we notify the owners that the drawing is to begin, and the person with the first reservation picks a letter and we go from there. Owners are free to trade or switch pups after the drawing, we have no problem with that.
