Throughout the years, early speed has always been an advantage around the La Marque, Texas oval on the Gulf Coast. This week’s Greyhound of the Week, Deadliest Catch from Turner Racing Kennels, personifies that quality with loads of speed from the 550-yard starting box.
After arriving here from Dubuque, Iowa towards the end of 2010, Deadliest Catch took some time to adjust to the quality of speedsters racing at Gulf Greyhound Park and finally broke through with a victory in grade A after seven starts. From that point on, Deadliest Catch has remained in top grade AA continuing to improve with his first grade AA win on January 28 and has now strung two wins together to earn this week’s honors.
Saturday evening February 26 would feature Deadliest Catch drawing a favorable inside #2 post position looking to redeem himself after failing to achieve the lead as he did in his previous four outings. Deadliest Catch was listed as the morning favorite over recent winner and second choice Night Frisco from Libby Racing Kennels. As the starting box opened, Deadliest Catch broke second but rushed furiously to the lead and opened up a quick advantage over his rivals. Night Frisco would chase the leader for the entirety of the race but could not make up any ground as Deadliest Catch coasted home to a 1 ½ length win in a very fast time of 30.03 seconds.
After that impressive effort, Deadliest Catch would return to the racing action on Saturday evening March 5 facing a major challenge from Jedi Dangeranger, C Ya Tom Collins, Cry Kaidence and Nina’s Fire Pen. On this occasion, Deadliest Catch drew the outside #8 post position and was sent off as the second betting choice behind red-hot Jedi Dangeranger on the rail. Deadliest Catch needed every ounce of the early speed he possesses to clear the field around the first turn but once that was achieved, it was clear sailing as contenders Jedi Dangeranger and C Ya Tom Collins ran into trouble. Deadliest Catch was never challenged again winning by 4 ½ lengths in a time of 30.17 seconds over a late closing Nina’s Fire Pen.
Trained by Peter Holl from Turner Racing Kennels, Deadliest Catch (Super Lee – Groove Hawg) now has a 2011 record of 12/4-3-3-1 only missing the paysheet once.
